Created and performed by Tedd Robinson, Riley Sims and Charles Quevillon
This 30 minute mash-up of 10 Gates Dancing’s recent NAC co-production Facets is being performed in its one-time-only configuration starring Riley Sims as the “guy in white underwear”, Charles Quevillon as “the musician” and Tedd Robinson making a guest appearance as “the guy with things on his head”.
Facets was premiered this year in May at the National Arts Centre and was a collaborative work of 7 creators influenced by the archives of Tedd Robinson with an original song score written and performed by Charles Quevillon. This version is a mash-up with newly added performance material. Young and old, odd and quirky, sad and sly, together at the same time lonely and not alone.
Tedd Robinson is best known for his idiosyncratic solo dance works, including the Chalmers Award winning Rokudo: six destinies in three steps. Robinson’s choreography juxtaposes spiritually controlled movement with unexpected moments of sly, subtle humour. Born in Ottawa, Tedd Robinson graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University, and studied at The School of The Toronto Dance Theatre and with eminent British visual theatre artist Lindsay Kemp. He first rose to prominence as artistic director of Contemporary Dancers in Winnipeg (1984-1990), where he created highly theatrical ensemble works. He returned to Ottawa in 1990 to pursue a solo career and study with Peter Boneham at Le Groupe Dance Lab, and became firmly established as a choreographer, mentor and solo artist. His collaborators have included artists such as Margie Gillis (2003-2014), Louise Lecavalier (2003-06), Ame Henderson (2011-2015) and composer/performer Charles Quevillon (2010-2015). Robinson is artistic director of 10 Gates Dancing Inc., a non-profit company formed in 1998 to promote the development and performance of contemporary dance creations. Between 2005 and 2012, he took up residence in the Pontiac, Québec and established La B.A.R.N., an intimate venue for creation and performance. Through 10 Gates Dancing he created a series of works, and in 2009 won le Prix en art de la scène l’Avant-Première at the Culturiades de l’Outaouais. Since 2013, he also co-directs Centre Q: a centre for questioning. His work is influenced by his six years of study as a monk in the Hakukaze soto zen monastery, Ottawa. He is winner of the 2014 Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts, a founding member of Projet bk, and an Associate Dance Artist of the National Arts Centre.
Since 2005, Charles Quevillon has developed a direct approach to musical expression through his electroacoustic and instrumental work. He studied composition in Cegep St-Laurent and at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal. Now, he specializes in the composition of mixed music. His actual research concerns principally the composition/choreography of the musical performance. It’s through his close collaboration with Tedd Robinson that he has discovered a passion for movement. He performs many of his works himself. His recent piece Corde à Vide was composed for a suspended musician at the center of a chime of plucked-string instruments. He was chosen twice to perfect his compositional skills at the Orford Arts Centre and once at the Académie du Domaine Forget. Charles has composed for and performed in a number of works by Tedd Robinson, including The 60 Dancer Project at CDF 2014, and most recently for Facets. He received a Dora Award nomination for his music for Robinson’s Sticks, commissioned by Yvonne Ng. He is co-director of Centre Q, and has received grants from the CAC, CALQ, FQRSC and the Socan Foundation.
Riley Sims is a graduate of The School of TDT’s Professional Training Program in Contemporary Dance and Wexford School for the Arts’ Musical Theatre program. Since graduating from STDT, Sims has gone on to dance in works by numerous choreographers including Tedd Robinson, Noam Gagnon, Melanie Demers, Michael Trent, Darryl Tracy and Andrew Turner. For three seasons, he was a company member of Ottawa Dance Directive under the artistic direction of Yvonne Coutts. Sims’s own contemporary dance company, Social Growl Dance, was founded in 2012 and has presented work at Dance Matters, Gallery 1313, Fresh Blood, and Dances by Youth for Youth – a project mentored by Peter Boneham. In 2014, Social Growl Dance received two creation residencies supporting Sims’s first full-length work Are You Still Coming Tonight? His most recent work Judy and The Reckless for Winnipeg’s Nova Dance Collective premiered in March 2015. In May 2015, he collaborated on Facets, a work by 10 Gates Dancing that re-imagined the repertoire of artistic director Tedd Robinson.
